Michael Collins Wool Throw

A piece of Irish history, faithfully woven by Foxford.

The Michael Collins Throw from Foxford is more than an Irish wool blanket. It is a reproduction of a remarkable piece of Irish history, created in conjunction with Michael Collins House in Clonakilty, County Cork.

In July 1922, a specially commissioned Foxford travel blanket was presented to General Michael Collins to mark his appointment as Commander-in-Chief of the newly established Irish Army. Just weeks later, on August 22, Collins was killed in an ambush at Béal na Bláth, County Cork.

The Foxford blanket had been travelling with him in his armoured car. It was later recovered at Shanakiel Hospital by Nurse Nora O'Donaghue and ultimately donated to the National Museum.

Recreated from a Historic Foxford Original

Foxford has reproduced the historic throw using its traditional check pattern and vintage-style 4-ply yarn, preserving the strong, practical character of the original travel blanket.

The striking check combines deep olive green, warm gold and natural white, creating a distinctly heritage-inspired palette. Multiple check patterns intersect throughout the design, giving the blanket a character that feels authentically archival rather than simply decorative.

A traditional rolled fringe finishes the edges, while a bespoke Michael Collins House label commemorates the story behind the piece.

Woven in Ireland by Foxford

Foxford has been weaving in County Mayo since 1892, and its history is intertwined with generations of Irish life.

The Michael Collins Throw creates a particularly tangible connection to that past. From the original blanket presented to Collins in 1922 to today's carefully reproduced edition, it brings together Irish history, Irish wool and more than a century of Foxford weaving tradition in one extraordinary piece.
